  | You Are What You Eat, So Eat Kosher!
  |
 |
This week's Torah Portion, Shemini, teaches us about the laws of kosher food. Kosher means "fit" or "proper." To live the way G-d wants, we must only eat certain foods. Here are some kosher fun facts:
- Fish must have fins and scales.
 - Animals have to both chew their cud and have split hooves.
 - We only eat those birds which we know to be kosher by tradition.
 - Insects and all reptiles and amphibians are unkosher. (Certain locusts are kosher, but they are not commonly eaten.)

In general, there are three types of food:
1)	Fleishig - meat and fowl
2)	Milchig - milk, cheese and all dairy products
3)	Pareve - fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, drinks
The Torah states three times, "You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk." This means that we should not eat, cook, or benefit from using milk and meat together.
